ESSAY

Allen Lane launched Penguin Books in 1935 with ten titles. Some of the authors who were part of Penguin's introduction were well-known at the time, and continue to be today (Agatha Christie, Ernest Hemingway). But some of the other authors and books have faded into publishing history, and are no longer available. We've taken a look at "The Original Ten" (as they've become known) in order to find out what they've been up to in the past seventy-five years.

Penguin founder Allen Lane started out with an idea—quality literature didn't need to cost a lot of money. Over 75 years Penguin went from selling paperbacks that cost no more than a pack of cigarettes to an international publishing powerhouse.
